Troubleshooting

The things that actually go wrong, what causes them, and how to tell one cause from another.

Net worth looks wrong#

A liability entered as an asset. Credit cards and loans are account types in Accounts. Set the type and Monestra subtracts them.

Currencies that could not be combined. Look at the line under the total: "Shown in INR · plus USD, GBP". Monestra will not convert until you turn on Market data, and it says so rather than showing a smaller number.

Something counted twice. Usually a holding in Investments that is also in Assets. Split by intent — see the boundary.

Something you expected to count, that never does. Goals, Compensation, Staff and Travel contribute nothing to net worth, by design. Each chapter explains why.

The history chart is flat, or starts late#

It starts where your records do. Value history is built from what Monestra observed at the time, so it cannot predate the day you entered a record. Backfill it by hand or from a CSV — see Value history.

It steps rather than curves because Monestra carries the last known value forward and never interpolates. That is the honest shape of manually-updated data.

A range button seems to do nothing. A "1Y" range on two weeks of data is still two weeks of data.

A price will not update#

  • Market data is off. Check Fetch latest prices & rates in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Leaving this device; it ships off.
  • No API key. Rates need no key; prices do.
  • The daily limit is used up. Alpha Vantage allows 25 lookups a day on the free tier.
  • The currency does not reconcile. Monestra will not write a price it cannot verify the currency of. Re-resolve the holding's symbol through search rather than typing a ticker.
  • It is crypto. Crypto is manual-price only.
  • It is a mutual fund on a provider that does not cover funds.

Sync is not happening#

Check Settings ▸ Backup & Restore ▸ Where your data lives. The Sync row reports the mode the store was opened with, not the one requested.

  • Signed in to iCloud, with iCloud Drive on?
  • Network available?
  • Same Apple Account on both devices?

The reliable test: make a small edit on one device and watch for it on the other. Monestra can detect a database that fails to open, but not one that opens and never mirrors — see the known gap. If it does not arrive, sign out of iCloud and back in on the lagging device.

The Checklist will not empty#

  • Past months cannot be completed. They read as a close, not a list.
  • Out-of-date rows need a fresh value, not a payment. Use Update balance.
  • Something genuinely does not apply this month — dismiss it. That is what dismissals are for, and they are per-month.

The Assistant will not answer#

It needs a device supporting Apple Intelligence, with it enabled and the model downloaded. The Assistant names which of those is missing rather than failing vaguely. It never fabricates a reply.

A reminder never arrived#

  • The module may be hidden — hidden modules are silenced.
  • Notification permission may have been declined; check your device Settings.
  • The lead time may put it earlier or later than you expect.
  • Amounts are absent from the body unless you switched that on — the reminder may have arrived and simply not said the figure.

I forgot my backup passphrase#

The file cannot be opened. Monestra does not know the passphrase, does not store it, and cannot reset it. How well an exported file resists someone who obtains it therefore depends on the passphrase you chose. Use a snapshot inside the app instead, if you have one.

Values will not unmask#

Unmasking requires Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode by default. On a device with nothing enrolled, turn off Require Face ID to reveal values in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security.

This manual describes what Monestra does with the records you enter. It is not financial advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation to buy, sell, hold, or arrange anything.

Monestra is published by Aneri Parikh. Your money, and nobody else’s business.
